18-car pileup on New Portsmouth freeway leaves 8 dead

YANCEYBURG, New Portsmouth--A massive pileup on a busy freeway has left eight people dead and more than a dozen injured.

The 18-car pileup happened early this morning around 3:40 am eastern time in the north-bound lanes of NR-1, just north of Yanceyburg and south of Dayle-Locke.

The New Portsmouth Highway Patrol (NPHP) says a vehicle that was stopped on the highway in heavy fog may have caused the chain-reaction collision. It's unclear what caused the vehicle to stop, but investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved.

The NPHP confirmed the collision involved several cars, at least two tractor trailers, as well as a church van heading back to Dayle-Locke from a youth retreat.

Five people were dead at the scene, and three more died later in hospital.

More than a dozen are injured, most with non-life-threatening injuries, a spokesman for NPHP said. They were taken to area hospitals in Dayle-Locke and Yanceyburg.

It's unclear if any of the fatalities involved children from the church group.

The Highway Patrol is still investigating, and the highway remains closed. NPHP expects to have it re-opened by 2:00 pm.
