LANSDALE--Track and field Olympic champion Damien Rudcliffe has announced he is running for POG's Senate seat in the 2012 election.
The 30-year-old Olympic star, who won a silver medal in the 1500 metre challenge at the 2004 games in Sydney and a gold medal in the same event in 2008 in Beijing, will run for the seat currently held by Conservative incumbent Charlie Quince.
Rudcliffe will run as a Nationalist.
He faces four other declared candidates, including Rep. Jill Yateri (Hapler Valley), Rep. Deacon Busby (Kilney), former Lt. Gov. George Mercott, and businessman Pat Gaynor of Lansdale.
Rudcliffe has not formally announced his campaign, but a personal source tipped off the Lansdale Focus, which is reporting the track star will make a formal announcement within a week.
The Conservative side is also crowded, with six candidates challenging Quince, who was appointed by Gov. Donna Almone in 2007 and has never been elected to the Senate.
The first delegate elections take place on May 16.
